When a factory fire broke out in Derrimut, Melbourne’s west, it quickly became one of the largest fires the state has seen in recent years. More than 180 firefighters responded to the scene on Swann Drive, battling the blaze fueled by hazardous materials like kerosene, fuel, and ethanol. The fire, which started around 11:20am on Wednesday, was brought under control by 3:30pm, though efforts to fully extinguish it will continue for days.
When it comes to emergency after-fire responses, CSA is equipped with a dedicated team ready to jump into action.
Stepping in Post-Fire and Spill
In the aftermath of the firefighting efforts, the focus shifted to managing the hazardous remnants left by the fire and the resulting spill. This is where CSA, with extensive experience in handling complex spill projects, came into play. Known for our expertise in managing chemical and biological hazards, CSA’s role was crucial in ensuring the site was safely and effectively managed.
CSA Specialised Services undertook a comprehensive scope of works to address the aftermath of the fire and spill. The primary task was educting waste from the spill, a process involving the removal of liquid waste and contaminated water using specialised vacuum trucks.
The waste generated from the cleanup operation was classified as contaminated waste and required disposal at EPA-approved facilities. This category includes various industrial liquid wastes that can pose significant environmental and health risks if not managed properly.
Containment Measures
One of the first steps in the cleanup, CSA Specialised Services deployed tippers, hook lifts, and skid steers to manage and transport debris efficiently. Sand barriers were strategically placed to prevent the spread of hazardous materials beyond the immediate area of the fire. These containment efforts were crucial in minimising environmental contamination and protecting the surrounding community, ensuring that the hazardous spill was effectively controlled and managed.
Decontamination Processes
After containment, CSA implemented a rigorous decontamination process using eductor and combination trucks. This process involved thoroughly washing down surfaces, neutralizing hazardous chemicals, and ensuring that any residues were safely collected and contained. The decontamination required meticulous attention to detail to ensure that no harmful substances remained on site.
Safe Disposal of Hazardous Waste
Once the waste had been educted and the site decontaminated, the next critical step was the safe disposal of the hazardous materials. Adhering to the guidelines set by the EPA, CSA ensured that all waste was transported to certified disposal facilities and fleet.
Previous Experience and Expertise
CSA Specialised Services brought a wealth of experience to the Derrimut cleanup operation. Their previous work included handling similar incidents, such as the stormwater cleanup after factory fires and the emergency response to the Dandenong fire. This experience equipped them with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the complex and hazardous conditions presented by the Derrimut fire.
CSA Specialised Services ensures that drainage systems remain operational and reliable, even in the challenging conditions following fires. Learn more about how we can assist with your liquid waste management needs by contacting us at 1300 859 829.
